How do we deal with our things? Listening to our inner voices can show the way...

Early on in my first 1000 things project, I learned to listen to the constant internal dialogues with myself that were an integral part of the process. In fact, to a large extent they were the process: inner voices that were not just making suggestions; they were running the show...

I also came to realize that these were not really conversations with myself. They were more like scripts (automatic programs running unnoticed in the background) and mantras (frequently repeated phrases that expressed basic beliefs about my relationship with my things), telling me what (not) to do and why.

Their messages get in the way, but they also give me clues about the nature of my attachments to my things. In the process, I've also learned to listen for, and cultivate, healthy inner voices that help me learn how to let go.
